Kaiser Permanente Sets Up Flu Shot Pop-up in Seattle
Did you know there are between 9.2 million and 35.6 million cases of flu each year in the United States, of that, the flu put over 500,000 people into the hospital and killed over 80,000 last year?
The good news is you’re not too late to get your flu shot, and it only takes a few minutes to get it done. This past week, I had the opportunity to team up with Kaiser Permanente located in Seattle, Washington to learn more about the flu and how to protect yourself from the contagious virus.
We setup a Kaiser Permanente flu pop-up just outside of Whole Foods in South Lake Union bright and early (actually it was quite dark) accompanied by two nurses and a handful of staff passing out hand sanitizers and health kits. And don’t forget the hot coffee, that was much needed. We had around 100 people of all ages come through the pop-up to get their flu shots, our true heroes of the morning.
I don’t know about you, but I grew up in a household where the words “Health is Wealth” was preached on a daily basis, thank you dad for instilling those words in me. To translate, maintaining good health is far superior than making a ton of money because at the end of the day, if you can’t enjoy it, then it doesn’t matter. A wise person once told me, if you don’t take care of your health now, you’re going to end up paying for it later with interest, so might as well do it now. Now our whole family is protected and ready to continue experiencing the beautiful fall season without worrying about getting the flu.
Here are some ways to protect yourself against the flu this season. Get an annual flu shot (sometimes hospitals will have free pop-ups like the one we had on Monday with Kaiser Permanente) Practice good health habits like washing your hands and using a tissue and covering your mouth when sneezing. Try not to touch your eyes, nose, or mouth without first washing your hands. Maintain a good immune system by eating fruits and vegetables, exercising, sleeping, and reducing stress.
The average flu season starts in October and goes all the way till March, and typically peaks in December.
It’s recommended that everyone six months and older receive a flu vaccine, especially higher risk populations such as chronically ill patients, seniors and pregnant women.
Getting a flu shot isn’t just important to protect yourself, it can help protect the community too by preventing the spread of the flu virus.
In addition to getting a flu shot, other ways to protect yourself include hand-washing, using hand sanitizer, covering a cough or sneeze, and avoiding others who are sick and staying home from school or work if you are sick
If you’re looking to get your flu shot, you can stop at a CareClinics by Kaiser Permanente at Bartell Drugs, they’ve made it super convenient for everyone to get the care they need when they want it. Healthcare access for the community means everyone can be well, get well and stay well.
Please consult your doctor before getting the flu shot.
